Fall 2015 Classes at The Arts Barn

The Arts Barn is a happening place this Fall with an array of opportunities to spread your creative wings. We’re so excited to be able to offer these wonderful classes to you. Please join us in our mission to spread the Arts!

All classes take place at The Arts Barn. All art will be completed to take home at each class (unless otherwise noted), all supplies and tools will be provided and no experience is necessary unless otherwise stated.

There are always snacks and beverages available and our classes fill quickly so please send in your registration, or register online, as soon as you can so you won’t be disappointed. If at all possible, we will add classes as needed.

Please come appropriately dressed (including proper footware) for the type of class you are attending. If in doubt, just call and we will happily advise you.

One stroke Botanical painting

Learn to paint lovely flowers, trees plants and grass with one stroke of a brush!

Ages 16 & up

Paint lovely flowers, plants, trees and grass with one stroke of a brush. It is a simple process, once you learn the technique. No experience necessary.


Learn to knit!

Hands on instruction in knitting dish cloth and scarf!

Beginner’s Knitting Class

Tuesdays, September 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th, 6:30PM – 8:30PM

Instructor: Robin Zimmerman
Cost: $50
Ages 8 & up (Ages 8 – 12 with accompanying adult)

Class includes discussion about purchasing various yarns and finding quality yarn and needles. There is no need to purchase anything to start. Students may borrow  yarn and needles from instructor. After hands on instruction, you will be required to purchase cotton yarn for a dishcloth, yarn for  a scarf, and needles for both projects that we will be completing in this class. This investment will be approximately $20 – $30.

Participants will receive a hard-cover journal, artist pen, pencil and eraser. No experience necessary. Participants will create journal entries using drawings and writings to increase your creativity.

This is an instructional class on  how to achieve that popular “worn” look. From the beginning of how to prep your projects, to demonstrating  different staining techniques and applying milk paint, as well as showing various techniques for getting the distressed/aged look you want.


Zentangle

Explore the endless possibilities of Zentangle …create 2 unique pieces using tile, black ink and shading!

Zentangle® 101 Workshop

Ages 10 & up

You will learn the history and terminology of this art form, as well as be guided step by step in order to create two of your own Zentangle® masterpieces using the traditional tile, black ink, and shading. Start here and know that the possibilities are endless! No experience required.

Small batch dying – little mess and environmentally friendly!

Ages 10 & up

Learn small batch dying that can be done on the dining room table with minimum mess. In the first class, using environmentally-friendly Procion dyes, you will learn the  dying technique while creating 1-1/2 yards of unique fabric. In the second class, you will draw or stitch  on top of your fabric to express the design hidden inside. You will only need  a frame for your finished project.

Make folk art style pottery with your own or traditional designs

Redware Sgraffito Plate Workshop

Sunday, October 4th, 10:00AM – 4:00PM (Lunch will be provided.)

Ages 12 & up (Ages 12 – 15 with adult participant)

This workshop will focus on the sgraffito technique used by area 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania German potters to make expressive designs in their folk art pottery. Sgraffito means “to scratch” and workshop participants will draw and scratch a design of their choosing in a damp clay coating on a Redware plate. Participants can choose a traditional Pennsylvania German design, or create their own design! Included in the class cost is a molded 7″ Redware plate. (A 10″ Redware plate can be purchased for an additional charge). All the sgraffito tools and books for ideas are provided , or bring your own! After the workshop, the plates will be glazed, fired and returned to The Arts Barn for pickup within 3 – 4 weeks.

Learn the skills of cutting and arranging mosaic glass, then grouting and polishing for a finished piece!

In this class you will learn the skills of cutting and arranging mosaic glass. You can choose to bring your own design or select one that night. In the second class you will learn to polish and grout your finished piece and go home with your very own mosaic masterpiece!


Fused Glass: Let’s Get Creative!

Create with fused glass – make a small bowl, dish, coasters, pendants, Christmas ornaments or more!

Ages 15 & up

Through demonstrations and hands on learning, you will discover the basics of fused glass. Each participant will cut and assemble various colors of glass and arrange them so that they can be fused into one piece. Participants can get creative – make a small bowl, dish, coasters, pendants. Christmas ornaments or more! Cost includes enough materials to make two small dishes, bowls, tiles (or 4 pendants). No experience necessary.

Learn how to use Zentangle® grids to create complex patterns.

Ages 13 & up (plus Zentangle® 100)

See how visually complex patterns are broken down into their individual elements to show their simplicity, while using Zentangle® grids. Once you learn  the basics of grids, the possibilities are unlimited as to how they can be manipulated to make a huge impact on the design created. You will be amazed at what unfolds from your pen “one stroke at a time”.

Any age with sewing experience

Create a wool felt appliqué door hanger. Select a kit from 3 different choices and have a project completed in a very short time. Everything is included in your kit but you will need a sharp pair of fabric shears. Registration and preselection of kit is a MUST by October 8th to ensure availability.

Ages 14 & up

This hands-on class teaches the basics of cold-process soap making. Participants work together to make a batch of soap, of which everyone will get about 4 bars and 2 free samples of inventory, as well as a guidebook to take home! Take home kits are available for an additional $20…Think holidays!


Stained Glass – Beveled Star

Create a stained glass star as a special keepsake or gift. No prior glass experience is needed!

Tuesday, November 3rd and Wednesday, November 4th, 6:30PM – 8:30PM

Create a beautiful beveled star…your choice of clear, blue or green! You will be led through the construction of a 12 point glass star while learning the whole process of grinding edges, foiling, soldering and polishing the finished piece all ready to hang. No experience necessary.


Bonsai Tree

Saturdays, November 7th and 14th, 10:00AM – Noon

Teacher: Mark Golomb

Ages 16 & up

In this class you’ll be making your very own Bonsai tree, complete with a bundle of wire and a granite base! Eye protection is a must (glasses are fine). Anyone having access to a metal vise is encouraged to bring that along as well. We can only book as many students as we have vises. If you can bring one let us know at registration.

Through demonstrations and hands-on learning, you will discover the basics of fused glass and make your own jewelry. You will be able to create your own unique design, size, shape and color of pendants, earrings or barrettes. Finished items will be ready to be picked up in the Gallery in approximately 2 weeks. They make great holiday gifts!
